The University of Illinois Graduate Scholarship offers a fully funded opportunity covering tuition, health insurance, and providing a living stipend of $31,800 per year.

Dr. Rutkoski is currently seeking a Master’s or PhD student to contribute to research aimed at enhancing the profitability of wheat production in the Midwest.

In addition to conducting independent research, graduate students will lead some applied breeding or phenotyping activities and participate in selection decisions in the University of Illinois soft red winter wheat breeding program.

Aligned with the long-term goal, hired graduate students will develop independent research in plant breeding and quantitative genetics, focusing on:

1. Improved phenotyping and selection methods for traits critical to the profitability of the wheat-soybean double-crop system, or
2. Predictive breeding methodologies leveraging advancements in genomic prediction and high-throughput phenotyping to accelerate improvement in grain yield in wheat.

Eligibility:

To be considered for this Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

• Strong interest in scientific research
• Willingness to undertake tasks including reading scientific publications, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and writing manuscripts for publication
• Strong interest in applied plant breeding and collaborative teamwork
• Preference given to applicants with work or internship experience in field research or applied breeding programs
• Prior experience with data analysis and/or statistical programming is advantageous
• For PhD applicants, successful completion of a Masters is highly preferred
