What is the Diversity Visa Lottery?
The Diversity Visa Lottery is a program designed to increase the diversity of immigrants coming to live in the United States. The program is administered by the Department of State and provides an opportunity for over 50,000 individuals from countries that don’t send many immigrants to the US to obtain permanent residency, also known as a “green card”. This program is an avenue for individuals and families who may not have a legal means of immigrating to the US to obtain permanent residency.
Entering the Diversity Visa lottery (aka green card lottery) involves filling out a simple form online, and it doesn’t cost anything. You can enter the lottery every year from early October through early November. The winners are selected at random by a computer, and they and their immediate families receive green cards.
